Movie Review: ‘Kapoor & Sons’ by Neha Ravindran

Movie: Kapoor & SonsDirector: Shagun Batra

Cast: Ratna Pathak Shah, Aalia Bhat, Rishi Kapoor, Rajat Kapoor, Siddharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan

Genre: Family Drama

Kapoor & sons’s trailer had people going gag over it long before the release date. This certainly was a much awaited movie of 2016. It had two heartthrobs in the lead role and a very adorable Rishi Kapoor as a 90 year old man. This movie is worth the restless wait for months!

Every family has a little pocket of lies known to the world outside and sometimes hidden from other members of the family. But what will happen when the secrets threatens to spill over? Harsh (Rajat Kapoor), his wife Sunita (Ratna Pathak Shah) and his father (Rishi Kapoor) live in the beautiful hill station Kunoor. Rahul (Fawad Khan) their eldest son is a famous novelist in London and Arjun (Siddharth Malhotra) is a struggling writer in New Jersey. They all come together to fulfil dadu’s (Rishi Kapoor) birthday wish to get a family picture clicked. But will this get together rip through the disguises concealing the true nature of each one of them?

Rishi Kapoor is by far the best part about the move. He plays the role of a 90 year old man with an absolutely stunning make-up to support his character. He is a playful, naughty old man with a wild gleam in his eyes and an attitude that screams ‘dil toh baccha hai ji’.Fawad and Siddharth remain the ever-green eye candies. With two handsome hunks in the movie, and a burger in my hand, I am still not certain who was I exactly drooling over. Thankfully, they do not just stay as a pretty face but share an intense onscreen chemistry and bring it alive with good performances. Ratna Pathak Shah and Rajat Kapoor bring to screen the complexities of the relarionship between their characters with ease and grace. Aalia is certainly venturing beyond her cute tag to fit into more experimental roles and is certainly evolving as an actor.

The story by Ayesha Dhillon and Shagun Batra carefully captures the jealousies, misunderstandings and lies that can cripple relationships and families. Without turning predicatle for a second, the story weaves through a fascinating narrative set in the backdrops of a beautiful valley. Cinematography by Jeffery Bierman captures the beauty of the story in its picturesque surroundings. Music by Amaal Mallik, Badshah, Arko Pravo Mukherjee, and Tanishk Bagchi is melodious, peppy and fun!

Kapoor & Sons is a must watch movie; I think bollywood has come up with an entertaining (sensible) family drama after a very long time. It will worth every second spent on the movie.

My verdict: ****
