Movie Review: ‘Housefull 3’

By Neha Ravindran

Movie: Housefull 3

Director: Sajid-Farhad

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Jacqueline Fernandez, Abhishek Bacchan, Nargis Fakhri, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Lisa Haydn

Genre: Comedy

Housefull 3 is the third movie in the Housefull franchise (kinda obvious I realise?!) by Sajid-Farhad duo. The movie is supposed to be a slapstick comedy but all it made me want to do is slap someone and stick something painful up their nose. Comedy is an art and requires a certain amount of sensitivity to not make people laugh without offending anyone. Housefull 3 will kill your funny bone and bury it deeper than you can ever sniff it out.

Batook Patel (Boman Irani) is a successful business man and lives in London with his three beautiful daughters Ganga (Jacqueline Fernandez), Jamuna (Lisa Haydn) and Saraswati (Nargis Fakhri). But he can’t get his daughters married due to a jinx on the women of his family. But his three daughters have found the love in Sandy (Akshay Kumar), Bunty (Abhishek Bacchan) and Teddy (Ritesh Deshmukh) and want to get married to them. Will Batook agree to his daughter’s happiness or does he have an ulterior motive behind his decision?

My view about Housefull 3 can be easily summed up in three words- racist, insensitive and below-the belt. I spent an agonising two and a half hours waiting for the movie to stop and scream to my heart content. Now that I have set the premise of my experience, let me list down my reasons for trashing the movie:

1. The storyline by K. Subhash and the screenplay by Sajid-Farhad have nothing new to offer. Rather, compared to the first two movies, Housefull 3 has the most regressive and disturbing script. It spares no change in mocking differently-abled people and blacks with the least buffer of humour.

2. The dialogues of this movie are senseless to the extent that even the term ‘ridiculous’ will probably disown them. Let me trouble you with some examples: ‘Sab kua jo ant kua’- All is well that ends well; ‘Shant Neeche’- Calm down; and so on. (If you happened to laugh reading these dialogues the… eerr… I don’t like you).

3. Jacqueline’s is the only tolerable screen presence from the entire cast. Lisa haydn had no other expression sans a completely confused look and Nargis Fakhri was trying too hard to look puppy eyed and cute. Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bacchan and Riteish Deshmukh’s acting is passable, only that their roles as paralyzed, mute and dumb men was just too much to bear.

4. Music by Sohail Sen, Mika Singh, Sharib-Toshi, Tanishk Bagchi, Milind Gaba have nothing special in store. They seemed alright for a one time go, at best. (Certainly not going to be haunting the radio chartbusters, atleast I pray so).

5. And last but not the least the very reason why this movie was made. Sajid-farhad, Housefull was not a great movie, but we sat through it. Not because we love you( let’s not harbour any wrong ideas please!) but because we believe every movie deserves a fair chance. Then you decided to torment us with Housefull 2; we wanted to kill you but our common sense told us better. But with Housefull 3 trust me you are treading on very thin ice, and I already hear it creaking.

If you appreciate comedy and treasure your sanity, kindly don’t waste your money over this movie. Please, better days will come, trust me. (sigh!)
