Movie Review: ‘Befikre’

By Neha Ravindran

Movie: Befikre

Director: Aditya Chopra

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Vaani Kapoor

Genre: Rom-Com

Aditya Chopra returns after a long hiatus with a new movie Befikre. Starring Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor, the trailers showed the couple frolicking around every corner of Paris. The story is old and the theme is repetitive, yet it’s not boring. Despite Ranveer’s same old craziness and Vaani’s botched up lip-chin job, Befikre will keep you engaged.

Dharam (Ranveer Singh) is in Paris to try his luck at standup comedy. Shyra (Vaani Kapoor) is French, born to Indian parents and works as tour guide in the city of love. A one night stand turns into a live in relationship but quickly the chinks in the link start showing. They beak and get back together realise that they were never friends, their relationship was based on lust than love. Will their new relationship as friends lead them to discover their love for each other?

Yes, it’s a story heard and done with a zillion times. No, they do not have anything, (absolutely nothing) new in offer. And yet, I liked the move. As critical Iam about the rundown, boring rom-coms, Befikre has a storyline. That’s, wat kept e engaged from one frame to another. Story by Aditya Chpra and Sharat Kataria has a well-built storyline with no breaks in between. The movie will make sense as it progresses and not once will you crinkle up your forehead in confusion. The music by Vishal- Shekar is fantastic to say the least. The songs are mostly dance numbers and have already found spot in every weddings dane floor. There is one particular dance sequence on the background score of the song, ‘Nashe si Chad gayi’. An amazing salsa sequence will leave you spell bound and wanting to see more.

Ranveer Singh has mastered his goofy look and honestly seems to be doing the same in almost every movie and in real life, its’ like he never stops acting. Except for Lootera, I do not remember any movie where his role demanded more acting than goofiness. Its high time Ranveer explored his potential as an actor through roles that are challenging and way distant from his own persona. Vaani Kapoor is a natural actor, she easily fits into the character of Shyra, a woman who is uninhibited and confident of her life decisions. Vaani sans her botched up lip job looks fantastic on screen.

Go watch Befikre for its sound story, songs and the to-die-for dance sequence. It is certainly a worth entertainer.

My verdict: ***
