Genre: Comedy-Drama
As a writer, there is one question I have repeatedly asked myself- ‘What is the secret to a good story?’ I found the answer today. Simplicity! Yeah, it’s as simple as that. Rajkumar Hirani picked up a visibly knotted up, questionable theme and built a surprisingly, simple story out of it. PK is one of the best releases of the year, so far, and well, as not much time is left for the year to end, for me, PK is THE release of 2014.The hero of the movie is neither the actors nor the director; it’s the storyline itself. I kept keep prying like an eagle for the script to make a faux pass and slip down a predictable lane and but nah! Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi have penned down a memorable experience and a lesson for each one of us, the importance of questioning, with a childlike innocence. A lesson we have all forgotten in the scramble to grow up.
PK (Amir Khan) is an alien (Yes! You heard it right). His remote control, his only connect with his space ship gets stolen the moment he lands on earth. Jaggu (Anushka Sharma) is a news reporter who spots PK distributing flyers declaring the ‘God’ as missing. She decides to help him out after hearing his story. The two, launch a war against a popular religious guru and the rest of the movie is a satire on religious stereotypes and poses innumerable questions that we all must have pondered over at one point in our lives.
Amir Khan is adorable in his portrayal of the character. He manages to essay the role with a sheer childlike innocence which is hard to not fall in love with. Anushka Sharma easily fits into the role of a chirpy-bubbly news reporter. Saurabh Shukla delivers a brilliant performance as a religious guru. Boman Irani and Sushant Singh, despite having limited screen space, manage to infuse meaning to their characters. The credit for this goes to the script again because there are no loose ends in the story. Every character’s presence in the movie is justified and no character has been drawn purposelessly. Never will you be left wondering- ‘What the hell just happened?’- which has been my standard state of mind for the past few Bollywood releases.
The songs are fun and you will catch yourself humming them for the rest of the day, (Well atleast I did). Every actors’s comic timing was just perfect, and though it is not your, rolling-on the floor- laughing comedy, its funny enough to keep you smiling till the very end. PK is a classic example of how we don’t need flying cars and over-the-top romance to make a good movie. Moving closer to reality is the new key to making a good cinema. PK is a must-must watch for everyone(age no bar) and I hope you will all walk out of the hall learning a lesson or two in the process, like me. Happy Watching!
My verdict: ****
