Hollywood blockbuster ‘The Avengers’ has officially overtaken ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II’ to become the third biggest grosser of all time at the worldwide box office. The superhero film achieved this landmark as it earned a USD 1.331 billion to trump over the Harry Potter franchise’s USD 1.328 billion.
The biggest blockbuster of all time is ‘Avatar’ with collections more than USD 2.8 billion. Number two slot is held by ‘Titanic’ with USD 2.185 billion. ‘The Avengers’ was released in April and it received USD 392.5 million opening worldwide. Within 19 days it matched the record for speed previously set by ‘Avatar’ and ‘Deathly Hallows’ in 2009 and 2011 respectively.
With these encouraging numbers ‘The Avengers’ has toppled ‘The Hunger Games’ from the number one hit of 2012 spot. Domestically, ‘The Avengers’ also reached a milestone on Friday, June 1 by surpassing ‘The Dark Knight’ to become the third top grossing film of all time with a collection of USD 538.1 million. The Batman film earned USD 533 million domestically.
