Movies To Make Big At The Box Office in 2017

By Deepti D.

Well, ‘Ok Jaanu’ with the so called ‘great’ version of Humma song has already been released and also flopped and so has the unconventional story and the title ‘Haramkhor’. So yes 2017 started on a bad note. But there are several movies lined up for this year which could make big at the box office. With ‘Raees’ and ‘Kaabil’ already out in theatres, a keen contest is going on between both the movies to rake in more moolah. Let’s see what all we have in store for 2017 and whether this year would fare better than 2016…

raees-posterRAEES

How can we not start 2017 with King Khan’s mega release…? Raees is one of the most awaited films of this year. Donning a typical Muslim look with ‘surma’ eyes , taaviz in the neck  and a stubble, SRK plays the role of a cruel and clever bootlegger who criticizes the prohibition of alcohol, prostitution and illegal drugs in Gujarat of the 1980’s. Also, starring Nawazzudin as the tough cop and the Pakistani beauty Mahira Khan, Raees has a gripping storyline which deserves the audience’s attention.

KAABIL

Sharing the same release date as Raees, Kaabil can be termed as Hrithik Roshan’s ‘comeback’ after the disastrous Mohen-jo-daro. Both the lead actors, Hrithik and Yami play visually impaired people and share amazing chemistry. The film is centred around Hrithik’s character who vows to avenge his wife’s rape and murder. Apart from the enthralling storyline, it’s the clash with Raees that is intriguing the audience and who would reign the box office.. so 26th January is the acid test D-Day !

JOLLY LLB 2

A sequel to the previous movie with the same name, this is the first Akshay Kumar starrer of 2017. This courtroom comedy drama movie releasing in February stars Akshay Kumar as a clumsy lawyer who is representing the most crucial and critical case of his career. The earlier movie has Arshad Warsi who did a fabulous job, let’s see how the master of various emotions Mr Kumar pulls this off.

RANGOON

Kareena Kapoor is the common factor in Rangoon, no she is not starring in the movie, but the film stars her ex Shahid Kapoor and current hubby Saif Ali in the main roles. The movie slated for a February release is gripping love triangle against the backdrop of the 2nd World war. The girl in question is Kangana Ranaut who is looking as vintage as possible. Let’s see how the trio would fair at the box office… they all need a hit desperately.

BADRINATH KI DULHANIA

The cute pair of Alia Bhat and Varun Dhawan pair in the March release is back. They star in thisromantic comedy which is the next instalment of their previous movie ‘Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania’ which was an instant hit because of its music and storyline. Let’s see what Mr Badrinath has to show us with regard to his dulhania this time

BEGUM JAAN

Vidya Balan is back after a hiatus in this historical drama film, an adaptation of a 2015 Bengali film where the story involves 11 prostitutes who refuse to let of their brothel and each other during the India Pakistan Partition era. With a unique story line, this movie should be a must watch for all people who want re live that era.

SARKAR 3

Amitabh Bachchan is back and how! His first release of 2017 is a sequel to the Sarkar series, an Indian political action crime thriller directed by Ram Gopal Varma and slated for a March release. Bosting of a pool of stars like Jackie Shroff, Manoj Bajpayee and Yami Gautam, this is a much awaited movie. Hope it lives up to its predecessors at the box office too.

JAGGA JASOOS

Come April and we would see the release of the ex-couple Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s Jagga Jasoos. This movie which is a musical adventure romantic comedy is about 2 teenage detectives in search of the male lead’s missing father. Although the shooting for the movie started way back in 2013, still after many delays, this movie is seeing the light of the day… hopefully it should light up the box office too.

BAAHUBALI 2

After the super success of Baahubali 1 comes its much-required sequel and is stated to release in April 2017. With its breath-taking visuals and stunts, this movie has to be seen for that one question boggling every audience’s mind ever since the 1st part released… why did Kattappa kill Baahubali?

HALF GIRLFRIEND

Once again Chetan Bhagat’s novel is being made into a movie and this romantic comedy has Arjun Kapoor playing a Bihari boy and Shraddha Kapoor as the modern city girl in the leads. Let’s wait and watch whether this May release would be as successful as the original novel. Only time shall tell.

RAABTA

Coming up this June is alleged love birds Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon’s romantic movie Raabta. Starring a series of other actors, Raabta is a story on human complex relationships and love triangles. Hopefully the off-screen chemistry of the lead pair would be the highlight on screen too.

TUBE LIGHT

The blockbuster duo of Salman Khan and Kabir Khan are back after the super success of ‘Bajrangi Bhaisaab’ in 2015. Now after 2 years they are again ready to create magic on box office with ‘Tubelight’, a historical war drama set during the Indo- Sino War of 1962. The audience is already excited to watch the movie as Sallu Bhai would be romancing the Chinese actor Zhu Zhu for the first time in a Bollywood movie. Are we seeing another super duper hit?

And Sanjay Leela Bhansali is back with another historical drama Padmavati. Starring his favourites again, the love birds Ranveer Singh playing a negative role as Alauddin Khilji and Deepika as Queen Padmavati along with Shahid Kapur as Raja Rawal Ratan Singh, this magnum opus love triangle is slated for a Nov 2017 release.

Movie Review: ‘Happy New Year’ by Neha Ravindran

hny-poster2

Movie: Happy New Year

Cast: Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone,Abhishek Bacchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah

Genre: Drama

With a Diwali night spent covering my ears with a pillow and holding onto my shivering dog (Iam neighbour to 50 year old ‘big boys’ who enjoy bursting loud-raucous crackers till wee hours of the morning), I woke up to Farah Khan’s Happy New Year. After a horrendous night, I forced a smile on face and a little jig in my step, as I hopped-and-skipped my way to see the touted block buster of the year. A glittering star studded cast, trailers screaming of peppy songs, Farah Khan’s enticing choreography, Shahrukh’s 6 pack abs (or was it 8?!), a promising plotline- this movie was to have it all. But then it’s the rule of life- you cannot have Diwali every day, but nightmares, oh! they follow you around mercilessly. So for me, it was jumping from the frying pan right into an iron hot pan!

Charlie (Shahrukh Khan) puts together a team of losers – Jackie (Sonu Sood) a deaf ex-army man , Tammy (Boman Irani) an expert safe cracker, Rohan (Vivaan Shah) a hacker and Mohini (Deepika Padukone) a bar dancer. They have to participate in a World Dance Championship because that’s their key into Hotel Atlantis in Dubai, where world famous diamonds are to be kept under the security of Charan Grover (Jackie Shroff). But it isn’t just about robbing the diamonds; Charlie, Jackie and Tammy have their personal intentions as well. Will these losers become winners? Because, you know, ‘kismat bhi badi kutti cheez hai…. saali kabhi bhi palat jaati hai.’

Sigh! So I am going to list down a few things I didn’t mind about the movie and some other things I very much minded about the movie:

Firstly the things I didn’t mind, a) The songs are peppy and you will undoubtedly tap your feet along with the songs; b) The dance costumes are loud and colourful often brightening up the otherwise dull scenes (and as a dear friend pointed out, some of them are borrowed from brother Sajid Khan’s movie, Housefull. Now that’s what I call being economical!); c) Deepika is truly a treat to watch on screen. She is graceful, elegant and despite the director’s best efforts, saves her character from becoming a cliché’; and d) The entire robbery scene was exciting. Though a bit over the top and obviously impossible to execute, I personally found it fun to watch.

Now the things I very much (VERY MUCH) minded, a) This movie will be remembered for Farah Khan’s worst choreography till date. Though, initially the script demanded so, later even the supposedly good ‘performances’ were despicable. The best dance moves in the whole movie was Prabhu Deva’s 10 second cameo; b) For a good part of the movie, Shahrukh Khan looks painfully old with his rugged looks. And with a young and pretty Deepika romancing him, it just seems like she has a thing for old men; c) Most of the dialogues are twisted from other movies (supposedly to make them funny) and are not even worth a giggle; and d) Sentiments are pretty misplaced and scattered. Best was an untimely introduction of patriotism that had me go WT*!

Now, to be honest, the whistling and hooting crowd besides me seemed to be enjoying even though I looked visibly bored. If you are to take my word, Happy New Year fails to deliver on all its promises and is waste of your money. But as I know half of you will still want to see the movie; so go, watch and share with me your feedback. I just hope for a better Diwali gift from Bollywood next year.

My Verdict:**

Top Ten Bollywood Films Of The Year 2012

6gnl7ct8voop6lx8.D.0.Ek-Tha-Tiger-PosterNew Delhi: (IANS) Action, drama, comedy or romance – you name it and Bollywood had it this year. Be it small-budget content-driven films or typical potboilers, the industry saw a great mix of movies throughout 2012.

Here’s the best of the lot that rocked the box office:

Ek Tha Tiger’: The very fact that former real-life couple Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan were the lead pair for this film was enough to draw audiences to the theatres. Its songs, picturisation and power-packed action kept the cash registers ringing, and helping this film garner approximately Rs.190 crore. Salman played an Indian spy named Tiger, who falls head over heels in love with a female spy from Pakistan, essayed by Katrina. Their chemistry, of course, worked.

Rowdy Rathore’: The return of `khiladi` Akshay Kumar – that`s what this film was awaited for. Akshay`s action, mixed with Prabhudheva`s distinct taste of dance and exaggerated jumps, gave Hindi movie buffs a perfect masala affair. The Bollywood remake of Telugu movie ‘Vikramarkudu’, it also stared Sonakshi Sinha. The movie earned Rs.140 crore.

‘Agneepath’: A remake yet again. The success ratio of remakes of past hits has been low, but ‘Agneepath’ was a dream debut for Karan Malhotra. He added a contemporary touch to the eponymous 1990 movie. With Hrithik Roshan reprising the role of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan and Sanjay Dutt playing the villain Kaancha Cheena, ‘Agneepath’ turned out to be 2012`s first blockbuster and managed to mint around Rs.120 crore.

‘Housefull 2’: One would hardly think of enjoying a movie with 12 known actors playing key roles. But this one managed to entertain viewers. A sequel to hit 2010 movie ‘Housefull’, this Sajid Khan film, with its classic comic sequences, but slightly crowded cast, made over Rs.110 crore at the box office.

‘Barfi!’: The simple story line, sensitive treatment and excellent performances helped Anurag Basu`s ‘Barfi!’ establish an emotional connect with the audience. The love story of a deaf and mute boy, played deftly by Ranbir Kapoor, with an autistic girl, essayed by National award-winning actress Priyanka Chopra, left many teary eyed. India`s official entry for the foreign film category Oscar this year, the movie, which is now out of the Oscar race, made collections of Rs. 110 crore.

‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’: Love was redefined in typical Yash Chopra way with ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. The late filmmaker, who bid adieu to the world just a few days before the movie`s release, gave his final work with the king of romance Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. The movie, also featuring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, captured the scenic beauty of London and Kashmir very well – garnering collections of over Rs.120 crore.

‘Bol Bachchan’: It was hard to think of a modern day version of the 1979 comedy ‘Gol Maal’. But Rohit Shetty made it happen – and how! This Abhishek Bachchan and Ajay Devgn-starrer turned out to be truly `paisa vasool`. Ajay`s one-liner English dialogues and Abhishek`s double dhamaal paved the way for crossing the Rs.100-crore mark for this film.

‘Son Of Sardaar’: Remember Ajay Devgn and his ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ stunt on two bikes? He took it to the next level by riding together on two horses in ‘Son of Sardaar’. A turban-clad Ajay managed to tickle the viewers` funny bone, along with Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha, and helped this movie make around Rs.105 crore.

Talaash’: Aamir Khan`s Midas touch rarely fails. ‘Talaash’ was just another case in point. This suspense thriller by Reema Kagti narrated the story of a Mumbai cop trying to put a puzzle in place and it kept the audience on the edges of their seats. The film, also starring Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji, made around Rs.90 crore at the Indian box office.

‘OMG: Oh My God!’: Comedy, sadness, anger and greed. Paresh Rawal carried out all emotions in one character flawlessly. Akshay Kumar played god in the Umesh Shukla-directorial, which questioned the existence of god. Complete with humour and a message, the movie minted over Rs.70 crore at the box office.
