From Farts To Toilet: Is Bollywood Breaking Barriers?

Filmi Fanatic
Aren’t the titles of the films going really quirky and different? Imagine telling a movie illiterate person, oh I went to see ‘Fan’ or ‘Tubelight’… that poor chap would be wondering as to what’s so special seeing the basic things of existence. And now we are all geared up to see ‘Toilet’, funny indeed… you use it every day and infact see it more than you see your sweetheart, but yes you would be seeing ‘Toilet’. But this is not what are article is all about. It’s actually about how things that were perceived taboo earlier are slowly coming in the mainstream cinema.

Remember ‘Hum Dil Chuke Sanam’ and how coolly Ms Ash made fun of Sallu’s name as ‘Sameer, Hawa ka Jhoka’, which was a taunt at the fact that he farted in front of her. But on second thoughts how many movies ever since have actually shown the lead actors farting, c’mon its natural phenomenon, but still films are scared of showing it… scared of the smell it would generate?

There are many things which were still considered a taboo or shame showing in movies but with the new breed of directors and writers and their innovative thinking, some of them are now being considered normal. Flashback yourself and think that had you ever seen the concept of ‘sperm donor’ in movies… shh what are we talking sperm and all that… but with movies like Vicky Donor and various web series, now we actually find the idea practical, it’s a way of helping the childless couple and in a way creating awareness. And talking about Sperms, the next thing which is haww so shameful to show in a movie is Oral Sex. Isn’t Sex an integral part of our lives and what’s wrong in showing the various forms of sex, thanks to films like Delhi Belly where the lead actor was actually shown going down on his girl rather than being on the top, we actually saw a little ‘different’ aspect of it even though it was not shown fully, but yes it was a change after all.

And how many of us have actually seen frontal nudity in films? We go ga-ga when the man shows his 8 packs or when the heroine strips down to her bikini, but people there is more to that and it seems impossible that we shall see a full Monty in movies soon. But hopes are alive… one day …one day!!

Sex leads to think us about relationships and yes, the concept of ‘live-in’ are now being shown pretty commonly in movies and so are the ‘gay relationships’ with Mr Karan Johar contributing to it in a way, how can we forget ‘Kanta Ben’ looking all shaky and shocked seeing SRK and Saif in the same bed! But why is a gender discrimination here also, if Gays are shown why are we still scared to touch the topic of ‘Lesbianism’. After all, if men have feelings don’t do the females have and the one film that dared to show it was ‘Fire’ although it is still considered parallel cinema. Waiting for that day when Lesbians would be shown in a main stream masala movie.

Awareness is also being spread in the form of making movies which cater to a certain section of society like in the case of My brother Nikhil, where AIDS was discussed or for that matter Taare Zameen Par which dealt with the problem of Dyslexia which is something not talked about it so openly, but yes, these movies are breaking the barriers. Movies are not only generating awareness about superstitions in fairly dominant religious country thanks to movies like PK and OH! My God, but upcoming movies like Toilet- Ek prem Katha takes the social mission of ‘Swatch Bharat’ forward.

When movies were just considered a mode of entertainment where you could forget about your life problems and just enjoy, the new trend is breaking barriers in making us sit and think and in a way making us aware, but there is still a long journey ahead and hopefully one day it would be achieved.

Salman Khan Concerned Over The Fate Of ‘Jai Ho’

jai_ho_2014_movie_still-1920x1080Mumbai:(PTI)Superstar Salman Khan, known for breaking box office records with his every film, says he is concerned about the box office fate of his upcoming release `Jai Ho` as he really likes the film and wants it to do well.

“It is said that the most favourite film of the actor hasn`t worked, so that fear is also there. So far it`s not happened with me, but there will be a time that it will happen. I hope this doesn`t happen with me with this film, because I really like it. The film has a lot of action, comedy, romance etc, and yet is not in the same format as my earlier films,” he said.

`Jai Ho`, directed by Sohail Khan, stars Salman, Tabu, Danny Denzongpa, newcomer Daisy Shah, Sana Khan, Suniel Shetty and others. The film, a remake of Telugu flick `Stalin`, is set to release on January 24.Earlier, in an interview, Salman had said that the space of masala entertainer films is explored too much in Bollywood and the genre will die some day owing to repetition.

The actor said `Jai Ho` did not have frivolous action.”The `Wanted` format is considered as an action film, whereas it is not. They are films with motive, drive and huge emotional content behind them. There is a story to it, it is not random, frivolous action that you kick and the villains are flying out. That format looked good, the films that came in that time like `Wanted`, `Singham`, `Dabangg` became huge hits,” he said.

Salman feels the movies which are being made in this space now have very little work for heroes while the fighters are doing more. On the other side, the hero in his films is doing everything – from climbing, jumping, fighting, romancing to comedy.

Author Chetan Bhagat To Write ‘Kick’s Screenplay

Popular fiction writer Chetan Bhagat will be writing the screenplay for Salman Khan starrer ‘Kick’. Chetan Bhagat is one of the most sought after authors in Bollywood. Have known both Salman and Sajid Nadiadwala for a while and been wanting to work with them. Couldn`t have asked for a better screenplay debut. Will be adapting Kick from original Telugu superhit, with fair amount of changes as well. Huge expectations, need all ur support! Thanks!”

‘Kick’ is  Hindi remake of a Telugu blockbuster of the same name and the screenplay will be inspired from the original. The Telugu kick was a story of Robinhood style robber who used to rob the rich and distribute the loot among poor.

‘Ek Tha Tiger’ Crosses 200 Crore Mark!

If Rajesh Khanna was the first ‘Superstar’ and Amitabh Bachchan the first ‘Megastar’ then a new word would have to be coined for Salman Khan as his latest movie ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ collections went past a whopping 210 crore in mere 11 days. Salman Khan should be called the first ‘Gigastar’ of Bollywood as the word ‘Giga’ takes the word ‘Mega’ to higher level.

After making an easy entry into the Rs 100 crore club ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ went on to become the first Bollywood film to cross Rs 200 crore mark after ‘3 Idiots’.

Confirming these astounding figures film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#EkThaTiger 12-day total of *approx* Rs 175 cr nett is from India alone. #EkThaTiger India + Overseas combined biz *after 2nd Weekend* is Rs 210 cr +. ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER…(SIC)”.

‘Ek Tha Tiger’ Celebrates Eid With 100 Crore Mark !

Super star Salman Khan’s charisma and star power has once again worked at the box office. His latest release ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ was released on August 15 and in five days flat the movie has crossed the highly coveted 100 crore mark. Directed by Kabir Khan, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ opened with a bang inspite of mixed reviews from cine goers and critics.

Noted film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted today, “#EkThaTiger – India *actuals* Sun 23.06 cr. Total: 100.16 cr nett. SUPERB. Fastest 100 cr grosser ever – 5 days [Hindi films]. NEW RECORD!”

“#EkThaTiger is @BeingSalmanKhan ’s 4th century [100 cr], the other three being #Dabangg [147 cr], #Ready [122 cr] and #Bodyguard [148 cr],” he added.

It seems Salman Khan has established himself as the most saleable Bollywood star and the kind of business and response his movies generate at the box office is a testimony to his star power.

Movie Review : ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (* One Star)

(By Akshat Sharma )It is festive season and Salman Khan knows how to take advantage of such charged environment. His latest release ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ is one of those movies which work only because of media hype and star presence. No one doubts that Salman Khan has one of the most loyal fan following in India but his movies give a clear impression that he is working in some of the most idiotic movies of modern era.

Fairly speaking movies like ‘Wanted’ and ‘Dabangg’ had some entertainment value and these movies had showcased Salman Khan’s star power in a better way.  But ‘Bodyguard’ and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ treat your commonsense with contempt. No matter how big your stardom is you need to deliver on screen.

Salman Khan is a Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) Agent working for India. When you build a character around spying and use Indo-Pak relations in the backdrop you need to put something into the script which connects with the subject. If the film maker was not serious about RAW and India-Pakistan tension then what was the need to even mention it. He could have easily been a private detective trying hard to protect a woman.

Even Saif Ali Khan did a better job in ‘Agent Vinod’ as he was atleast working on some kind of a mission which forced him to travel thirteen different countries. But Tiger (Salman Khan)  doesn’t need such basic plots. We see him on a mission in Iraq. His next assignment is to spy on a Professor who could be playing into the hands of the ISI, Pakistan’s intelligence agency.

Following the College professor Tiger reaches Ireland where he meets (Zoya) Katrina Kaif and it doesn’t take long before he falls in love with him. Since he is a RAW agent he can not afford to fall in love. This eternal dilemma of to be or not to be forces Tiger to take a escape route along with Zoya. The end of the movie has to be favourable to Salman Khan so no surprises here.

Directed by Kabir Khan, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ is a below average movie which works only in certain patches. These patches are few and far between. Salman Khan looks lost in most of the scenes and only when he is doing action or comedy he looks natural. His chemistry with Katrina Kaif had potential but the director was not  able to tap this to the fullest and they looked like an odd onscreen couple.

Music is the only saving grace in the movie as it packs some of the foot tapping numbers. Yashraj Films spend nearly 80 crore in production so the even if the movie crosses 100 crore mark it would only be a nearly 25 percent return on the investment. Keeping the number of prints, shows and increased ticket price in mind the movie is almost certain to cross 100 crore mark. But the fact remains, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ has nothing to offer to cine-goers who want to be entertained by a good film. So if you are not a pukka Salman Khan fan then it is better to watch a sensible movie than to watch this nonsense in the name of cinema.

My Top Position In Bollywood Is Dangerous :Salman Khan

A Still Image From ‘Ek Tha Tiger’

Mumbai: (PTI) After three back-to-back hits, Salman Khan is at the peak of his career in Bollywood but the actor says it is a dangerous place to be in as one does not know what to do next. “I am happy that my films are doing well. But it is a very dangerous position to be in, as we don’t know what to do in the next film. I don’t know what to do right now,” Salman said in an interview.

“If there is a larger than life character in films that I do, then it looks like no one can kill him which will get boring. If you take a film to a larger level then it is like too much is happening, if you don’t take it to that level then it feels like first was better. You don’t know what to do,” the actor said. After three consecutive Eid blockbusters – ‘Wanted’, ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Bodyguard’, the 46-year-old actor is now ready with yet another promising film ‘Ek Tha Tiger’.

Post his back-to-back hattrick with ‘Dabangg’ (Rs 215 crore), ‘Ready’ (Rs 180 crore) and ‘Bodyguard’ (Rs 230 crore), not only the audience but even the producers are pinning their hopes on Salman’s forthcoming film. If there is any pressure of delivering another hit at the box office, Salman is not showing any signs of it.

“I don’t feel the pressure…if it does not do well then it does not. We will see it in next film. If a film is good it will do well. If it is a bad film, it will bomb at box office. I believe audience is always right,” he said. Talking about the trend of the Rs 100 crore bracket, the actor said, “The Rs 100 crore club is just a PR workshop. The person who has come to watch a good film, if he likes it he will come again either with family or friends.

“The number of times he watches the film is good for all of us, for the movie as a whole, the producers, theatre, exhibitors and artists,” he added. The actor credits his success in films to luck. “I think I have been lucky to have got good films. It is the passion that keeps me going. I like my job and it has turned into my hobby and I enjoy doing it,” he said.

In his 24-year-old career in Bollywood, it is for the first time that he has teamed up with Yash Raj Films for ‘Ek Tha Tiger’. On the association, Salman says, “There is right time for everything. And ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ came at right time and place. Why I took so long, it is like asking why you are born now, why not later on?”

The story of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ lured Salman towards the film.”It was the script that attracted me to do this film. The script, Kabir Khan as a director and Katrina Kaif in the main lead, title ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, then I play a RAW agent, Yash Raj production, all these things were enough for me to go ahead with the film,” he said.

The film will hit theatres on August 15.
