Movie Review: Son of Sardaar 2

Son of Sardaar 2 is a riot of comedy, with punches, hilarious twists and incredible comic timing of Ajay Devgan as Jassi and the entire cast that shines, creating a laughing spree. Full of laugh-out-loud moments, this family drama is a must-watch film from start to finish, in the midst of a chaotic Punjabi wedding!

Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, the film stars Ajay Devgan and Mrunal Thakur in the lead roles with an ensemble cast of highly talented actors including Ravi Kishan, Ashwini Kalsekar, Deepak Dobriyal, Kubra Sait, Mukul Dev, Vindu Dara Singh and Roshani Walia.

Ajay Devgan (Jassi Randhawa), a simple Jatt from pind, awaits his visa and finally lands in Scotland to reunite with his wife (Neeru Bajwa) after years of separation. Upon reaching her home, he finds that she is in an affair with someone. Heart broken his friend tells him to meet a female lawyer and then begins the confusion as he mistakes Rabia( Mrunal Thakur) a Pakistani girl settled in UK, as the lawyer, and she eventually ends up hurting him.

Rabia single-handedly manages her life, as his husband Dilawar (Chunky Pandey) runs away with all the money, she earns through her dancing profession. Seeing Jassi in distress, Rabia allows him to stay in her house as a paying guest with her 3 flatmates, including Kubra Sait, Deepak Dobriyal, as Gul, dressed up as a woman who brings excellent comic timing and punches to the film.

Then begins the twists and turns, when Jassi ends up being the father of the bride(Roshini Walia), who’s the youngest girl in the house. Jassi pretends to be her father lying to be an army officer. He tried to impress the groom’s father, Ravi Kishan, who is a conservative man against love marriages, values family background more than the love of his son and hates Pakistanis and dancers. Then begins the confusion of false identities in between a chaotic wedding celebration, which becomes hilarious as various characters start emerging, creating a spree of laughter till your stomach hurts.

Director Vijay Kumar Arora has shot the film across many scenic locations across Punjab, Edinburgh and London, authentically capturing the colourful spirit and culture of Punjab and the non-resident Sikh community, that comes alive on the big screen, especially in the songs. Dialogues written by Jagdeep Singh Sidhu are full of punches with a desi swag, where at a point he also weaves Sunny Deol’s iconic dialogues from Border, which leave you laughing aloud.

Ajay Devgan stands tall as an actor, displaying perfect comic timing as Jassi, who just can’t lie. Mrunal Thakur bestows pure charm as a bubbly Rabia, playing a Pakistani girl who pretends to be the mother of the bride, as a Sikhni. With her perfect bangara moves, and Punjabi swag in her dialogues, she delivers most of the punches right. She has a great screen presence and a great romantic chemistry with Devgan in the song ‘Pehla tu duja tu’.Ravi Kishan stands out as a tough father delivering perfect coming timing with Vindu Dara Singh and Mukul Dev, who was seen last in this film.

Son of Sardaar 2 completely anchors the plot with over-the-top humour, making it a complete family entertainer with a mix of comedy, drama, music and cinematic beauty.
