Movie Review: ‘Jannat 2’ (**Two Star)

‘Jannat 2’ is a movie seems to be inspired from the Nicolas Cage’s ‘Lord of War’. A typical Bollywood masala story ‘Jannat 2’ does not evoke much response among the audience.  Based on the issue of arms trafficking the movie revolves around Emraan Hashmi who is a small time gun dealer.

He takes pride in being called Sonu Dilli KKC (Kutti Kamini Cheez!) and his only objective in life is to make the life of killers easy. He had it easy unless he finds ACP Pratap (Randeep Hooda) who is passionate to fight the arm dealers operating in his area. Sonu becomes a police informer after a close encounter with the ACP.

When pushed into the inner circles of the arms trafficking Sonu is asked by the Police to uncover the real faces behind the illicit trade. While doing all this  Sonu finds Jahnvi (Esha Gupta), a doctor who works at a government hospital.  The plot then takes a turn and Sonu strikes a deal with the police which could be mutually beneficiary to both the parties.

The narrative of the movie is predictable but thanks to some good work by the director and his team the movie does not fall apart. It would have been better if  director Kunal Dehsmukh had paid greater attention to spice up the thrilling moments in the movie rather than working aimlessly on elaborating the romantic content in the script

Emraan Hashmi has successfully addressed his constituency by doing what he is expected to do. He plays the role of a brat in his own style but he does not sound like a typical Dilli da Munda. The surprise package in the movie is actor Randeep Hooda’s commendable performance. He is one actor who is growing with his every single release. He has immense potential as an actor and very few directors in Tinsel Town have realised it.

Esha Gupta has not much to do in the movie. She looks glamorous on screen and that is the end of her contribution in the movie. The music in the movie has been highly appreciated by the critics and fans but its the background score which needs a special mention.

In short  Jannat 2 is not a bad film but it is also not a movie which you cannot afford to miss. Watch it only if you do not have anything else to do.

‘Jannat 2’ To Play Safe After ‘Dirty Picture’ Episode

Mumbai: (PTI)After `The Dirty Picture` got pulled away from being aired on television due to its bold content, the makers of `Jannat 2` have played safe and made certain changes in their upcoming film for the small screen audience.

The Emraan Hashmi starrer, directed by Kunal Deshmukh is a sequel to the 2008-hit film Jannat. The second instalment is up for release on May 4. `Jannat` was based on betting in cricket and the sequel is about illegal trading in arms and ammunition.

“While shooting for the film, we knew we would get `A` certificate for `Jannat 2`. So we knew censor board does not allow particular kind of language and doesn`t allow suggestive checks, love making and kissing. So we had to shoot alternate takes and situations for those portions of the film,” director Kunal Deshmukh, told PTI in an interview.

“I have been informed as a filmmaker about the guidelines of the Ministry of Broadcast and what we have done to ensure that we have a clean satellite film…We have shot alternate angles and takes for particular scenes and songs. The intimacy stays but there is no frontal lip lock or there is nothing that the censor board would object to. We have also done special dub for satellite where there is a clean version without any bad words,” he said.

Kunal feels the Censor Board has fairly evolved with time and that they have genuine reasons for objecting certain content on TV.

“When your film comes on TV during prime time, and once it is out there you don`t know who could be watching the film at that time. There may be a five-year-old or a ten-year-old kid and I wouldn`t want that kid to be watching the film with obscene language. So I am doing my bit,” Kunal said.

“I think the censor board is fairly evolved…They are changing with time. So if they have put certain rules and regulations they have kept the lowest common denominator in mind and done that. It is good that certain cuts are suggested for films that go on to TV. And I think filmmakers should be little sensitive to the censor board,” he said.

In ‘Jannat 2’ Emraan plays the role of an arms dealer called Sonu Dili KKC and model Esha Gupta is making her debut in Bollywood.

Talking about the film, Kunal says, “The film is about Sonu Dilli KKC. And from the flavor it is about a cunning street brat who gets his way by selling guns and conning people. He is willing to do anything for the girl. It is not action…Bloodbath kind of a film.”
