Film Review: ‘Crew’

Crew Crashes before
Take-off with Poor Humour and Vulgar Dialogues!

By Dr. Priyaankaa Mathur

Directed by Rajesh Krishnan, the film Crew although has been touted as a heist comedy, is hardly hilarious as expected, as the film lacks punches and comic timing for sure. The film does boast of a unique concept, being one of it’s kind of an onboard heist plot, lead by three women actors as Geeta Sethi (Tabu), Jasmine Bajwa (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and Divya Rana (Kriti Sanon),which is certainly a rare occuring  in Bollywood.

Revolving in the back drop of aviation industry, the trio is a part of the crew of Kohinoor Airways, owned by the Chairman Vijay Walia( Saswata Chatterjee), who’s inspired from real life disgraceful businessman Vijay Mallya owner of the dis-functional Kingfisher Airlines. He makes false promises to keep the Kohinoor’s Pride (the diamond) which the British looted, so did he empties the airlines and announces  bancrupcy and flees to a foreign land with all the moneys. While, his fraudent HR manager doesn’t fire employees but keeps them in falls hopes, untill he manages to escape with him too.

The film begins with a flash back of 6 months ago, as the flight was made to abort and return, not due to a technical snag but a gold smuggling, as tipped to the customs inspector, who interrogates the three crew members who are the prime suspects. While, Tabu seems comfortable in her skin portraying the older women being the senior flight supervisor, who is struggling to release her PF and retire. Kareena portrays the glamorous senior flight attendant who’s stuck between greed and need, while Sanon as a junior flight attendant stuck in between her self denial mode, manages well her place in the plot.

Geeta Kapoor who’s married to Arun Sethi (Comedy King Kapil Sharma), a home chef, who dreams to build a restaurant in Goa. He is struggling to provide and is a serious man who apparently doesn’t create a fraction of lightness in the air, what a loss!

Jasmine has been living with her grandfather (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), dreams big of lavish lifestyles and luxuries aspiring to be the CEO of her own company, but struggles to pay her bills. Divya Rana from Haryana as she’s called by her crush custom officer Diljit Dosanjh, happened to be the topper of her school, who dreamt of becoming a pilot, but ends up being an air hostess, and lies to her family.

The trio end up portraying more of agony aunts fighting hard their battles of survival as the airline is on the verge of bankruptcy, leaving behind thousands of employees in distress. The film takes you to their roller coaster ride, as they come across gold bars being smuggled onboard by an old crew member and eventually getting tempted to acquire suitcases full of gold at the glitzy Al Burj in Dubai.

While you expect a lot from actors like Tabu and Kareena Kapoor along with Comedy King Kapil Sharma, the film kind of disappoints you in the first half with its monotony with no comic sense, and appear done and dusted. Finally the second half starts to build up in the climax to give you some relief, as the trio unite and there comes the twist in the plot that the audience needs to find out themselves.

The film lacks maturity of thought, words and actions, while you come across vulgar dialogues which deserves an A certificate, overacting and poor picturization of ‘Choli ke peeche kya hai’ and replay of ‘Sona kitna sona hai’ time and again. The film lacks a gripping story and a screenplay, which has even diminished the performances of top actors, clad in skimpy clothes to add a pinch of masala to the plot!
